Just Browsing!

I admit it. I am one of those weird people who always says "No thank you, just browsing!" to the inevitable question posed by the salesperson: "May I help you with something?" Rather shamefacedly I also admit to getting slightly annoyed when I am asked this question more than once. By the third time I usually have several sarcastic remarks running thru my head. What part of "just browsing" don't you understand? (please note, my ever-so-Southern upbringing prevents me from being rude or voicing these little comments....I daresay if I did, my Mama would come down from heaven and give me a talkin' to). True, my browsing usually results in a purchase, but I normally do not need help finding something I came to purchase. When I need help, I know it, and usually ask for it right off the bat. And Lord help me there is something rather relaxing about being able to "just browse." No decisions, just lots of lovely things to remark upon - massive visual stimulation! Browsing is, at best, an excercise in creativity; at worst, a pleasant way to waste time. Your gaze lingers on a display of crisp linen napkins in silver rings, sparkling crystal and long waxy tapers as a centerpiece. Ideas start to churn...would it look right on the dining room table? Or maybe the tapers on the mantle and a big bowl of assorted silver napkin rings in the center of the table? And what type of wine would be served in those gorgeous cut crystal glasses? Browsing lets your mind have some play time...and I find I desperately need this time to appreciate beauty and let ideas run amok in my mind. Maybe that's why I resent someone asking me if they can help me. I know it is their job to do so, and an excercise in safety and customer service. But my answer shall remain steadfast: "No thank you - just browsing!"

Christmas Past, Present & Future

"Where Are You Christmas?"
Where are you Christmas?
Why can't I find you?
Why have you gone away?
Where is the laughter
You used to bring me?
Why can't I hear music play?
My world is changing
I'm rearranging
Does that mean Christmas changes too?
Where are you Christmas?
Do you remember
The one you used to know?
I'm not the same one
See what the time's done
Is that why you have let me go?
Christmas is here
Everywhere, oh
Christmas is here
If you care, oh
If there is love in your heart and your mind
You will feel like Christmas all the time
I feel you Christmas!
I know I've found you
You never fade away
The joy of Christmas
Stays here inside us
Fills each and every heart with love.
Where are you Christmas?
Fill your heart with love.

Christmas Ephemera for You!

It's almost Christmas! Joy to the World! Here Comes Santa Claus! Jingle Bells!
I love the Christmas season! Many people have a set image of their Christmas: maybe you prefer colored lights on your tree and bright, multi-color ornaments. Or maybe you like white lights and loads of tinsel. Or maybe your ornament collection represents travels or important events in your life like "Our First Christmas" or "Baby's First Christmas."
I have both of those on my tree! My Mother was a Christmas fanatic. Truthfully, I haven't had as much Christmas spirit since she passed away, but Darby and I are working on some new traditions and I feel happier this Christmas!
I have so much Christmas stuff (and still buying), that my tree looks different every year. This year I chose white lights and used only ornaments that were silver, gold, white and / or glittery or crystal. I threw in a few colorful ornamets that are covered in glitter for some punch and of course, included the little handmade Angel that Darby made when he was a child. (awwwe). I am very pleased with how the tree looks this year and plan to post an image soon! For now, here is some ephemera for those of you that collect images and / or craft. Please credit my blog if you use these images on your blog or on shutterfly, etc...thanks in advance. Enjoy!

Mary, Jesus and John the Baptist

During this Holy season, it only seems appropriate to do an entry featuring a religious piece of vintage jewelry. I absolutely adore this locket / pendant. It is so beautiful and has such a beautiful theme. This petite circular pendant pictures Mary, Jesus, and John the Baptist on the front in relief; meaning they are not flat. With metalwork this is sometimes called repousse - if this were in stone or shell it would be called a cameo. It is marked "RR Sterling"; unfortunately, this maker's mark has me stumped. I see a lot of religious jewelry pieces deaturing Jesus and Mary; but not so many with the addition of John. John the Baptist is referred to in one of the Gospels as Jesus' cousin. John preached faithfulness and honesty in one's duties, and the humble confession of one's sins. John baptized his listeners in the Jordan; this became such a large part of his ministry that he was given the surname "the Baptist." John even baptized Jesus. I suppose that's a little background on Baptism, though it wasn't meant to be! Hope you are having a wonderful and cheerful Christmas season! Incidentally, this piece will be on Ruby Lane shortly; condition is very good; expected patina (you can the difference in patina on the back where someone had a price sticker) and 1 tiny, tiny "ding" on the reverse.
